Styx Rocks Salt Lake City at The Eccles Theater
November 7, 2023
Styx returned to Utah this past Saturday, November 4th for a spectacular show at The Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City. The venue was packed full of fans, all eager to see the electric performance from one of the most iconic progressive rock bands.
Led by founding member, James “JY” Young and the incredible lead guitarist Tommy Shaw, Styx demonstrated that they still have what it takes to rock the stage and that they are still a formidable and relevant force in the music world today. Throughout the course of the night Shaw, Young and keyboardist/vocalist, Lawrence Gowan, would take turns regaling the audience with stories about their songs from the bands illustrious career. While these three would introduce the songs and lend their voices to them the rhythm section of Styx, drummer Todd Sucherman and bassist Ricky Phillips along with newest member Will Evankovich would light up the stage with some amazing performances that enthralled the audience.
For two unforgettable hours, the audience was treated to hit after hit from the bands extensive catalogue. We were treated to fan favorites such as “Lady”, “Fooling Yourself (the angry young man) and a sing along led by Gowan to the timeless “Come Sail Away.” Not being content in just playing the classics Styx released their 17th studio album in 2021 titled “Crash of the Crown” and the night included the title track along with their other single off the album , “Reveries.”
The night ended with an electrifying encore performance of the monster hits “Mr. Roboto” and “Renegade.” The performance was a testament to their enduring talent and ability to captivate an audience, making it a night to remember for all in attendance.
