Modest Mouse Rocks the 713 Music Hall in Houston Texas

The other night, I had the chance to photograph Modest Mouse’s show in Houston. The night was supposed to be a co-headlining show with The Flaming Lips, but they unfortunately had to cancel due to a family emergency. Even with that change, it was still a really great show, and both bands who did play made it a memorable night.

Friko opened the evening, and I was really impressed by how much talent they brought to the stage. Each member had such strong stage presence, and they played with an energy that felt fresh but super polished at the same time. By the end of their set, I knew I’d be listening to them more.

When Modest Mouse came out, the energy in the crowd shifted immediately. Their setlist was already strong, but it ended up being even longer than expected to make up for The Flaming Lips not being there. The light show added a whole new layer to the performance, with colors and patterns that perfectly matched the music and gave the stage such a cool atmosphere.

In between some songs, frontman Isaac Brock had funny monologues that broke up the set and kept the crowd laughing. It gave the show this casual, personal feel, almost like the band was just hanging out with us while playing music. By the end of the night, the energy between the band and the crowd was electric—it felt like everyone in the room was feeding off each other.

Even though The Flaming Lips couldn’t make it, Modest Mouse and Friko put on a show that was absolutely worth being there for. I’m really glad I got to experience it and capture it through my camera.
