Grace Potter Kicks off her Tour at The Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City

There are concert venues and then there is The Red Butte Garden Amphitheater.
Nestled against the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, surrounded by flowers, trees and even a waterfall, the venue provided a magical backdrop for last Tuesday night as Grace Potter kicked off her latest tour with the first stop in Salt Lake City. As the sun set and the cool air washed over the venue, the stage was set for the night to transcend something that would be just another concert.
Before Grace Potter took the stage, Nashville singer-songwriter Bella Peadon opened the show in what she described as the biggest performance of her musical career. Accompanied only by guitarist Logan Sherwin, Peadon performed a stripped-down set that showcased her songwriting and growing confidence as a performer.
One of the highlights of her set came when the audience joined her in a singalong of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” turning the amphitheater in a mountain chorus. By the end of her performance Peadon had done what every new musician tried to do, she left the stage with the audience wanting more.
As the sun started setting, Grace Potter strode out to the cheers of the crowd in the packed amphitheater. From the first notes of the evening, it was clear that the audience was in for an unforgettable night.
What sets Potter apart has always been her ability to make a venue of thousands feel like an intimate experience yet still feel like a rock show. Throughout the night she showed this ability between belting out a song with her powerhouse vocals and the next moment recruiting the audience into giving her bandmate a nickname to call him on stage when they perform as she hadn’t given him one yet.
Those unscripted moments became just as memorable as the songs themselves as the audience yelled out their name choices just as eagerly as they sang the songs back to Potter. The rest of the show went on like this with Potter singing a few songs and then stopping to talk to the crowd before jumping straight back into the music.
Potter’s voice has always been her greatest instrument and on this night, it was perfectly suited to cap off a night in the beautiful mountain surroundings. After the break Potter and her band came back to the stage welcomed by the crowds cheering and she closed out the show with her ballad “Stars” and fan favorite “Paris (Ooh La La). Her voice went from soft and emotionally filled to powerful and raspy in her anthemic hit.
It was the perfect opening night for Potter’s tour and a reminder that live music can still feel magical.
