The Gin Blossoms and Blues Traveler Heat Up Red Butte Gardens in Salt Lake City
July 19, 2026

Sometimes a triple lineup at a concert can feel like different shows and then again sometimes they become one shared experience, and that’s exactly what happened Tuesday night at Red Butte Garden as the Gin Blossoms, Blues Traveler, and Spin Doctors delivered an evening filled with nostalgia, musicianship, and one unforgettable moment that longtime fans may not see again anytime soon.
Even before the first notes, the Utah summer reminded everyone who was in charge. Temperatures lingered in the 90’s in the tail end of the afternoon, but a packed hillside of concertgoers settled in anyway, knowing they were about to hear the soundtrack to countless road trips, summers, and memories of their youth.
The Spin Doctors wasted little time getting the crowd moving. Chris Barron kept the audience engaged with his trademark humor between songs before teasing something special at the end.
“We’re about to do something that hasn’t been done for years.”
What followed became one of the night’s defining moments.
Instead of the traditional stop and tear down between sets, members of Blues Traveler joined the Spin Doctors onstage as the two bands seamlessly segued into one another. While Blues Traveler continued playing, the Spin Doctors quietly exited the stage, creating a continuous transition that felt more like one extended performance than a standard concert set change. It was a rare moment that rewarded longtime fans and highlighted the friendship between two bands whose careers have often crossed paths and used to be a common sight during their shows in the 90’s.
If the afternoon temps hadn’t reached their peak before Blues Traveler took over, the band certainly raised them once they hit the stage.
John Popper’s unmistakable harmonica playing remains every bit as impressive as fans remember, shining through the band’s blues-rock catalog. The energy immediately spiked throughout Red Butte Garden as fans jumped to their feet, dancing in the aisles, clapping along, and singing every chance they got. What started as an audience trying to stay cool quickly transformed into one fully dancing in the summer evening.
By the time Gin Blossoms took the stage the sun had finally started slipping behind the mountains, giving the crowd some much needed relief from the heat. The cooler temperatures gave the fans a second wind and kept them going throughout the third act of the evening.
Their set balanced deeper cuts with fan favorites, moving through songs like “Learning the Hard Way,” “Lost Horizons,” “As Long as It Matters,” “Follow You Down” and “Found Out About You.” The familiar opening chords of “Allison Road,” “Hey Jealousy,” and “Til I Hear It From You” turned the amphitheater into one giant singalong as the night came to a close.
The intimate atmosphere of Red Butte Garden only added to the experience. With the mountains serving as a backdrop and the summer heat finally giving way to a cool evening breeze, the
venue provided the perfect setting for three bands whose music has become the soundtrack of so many fans' summers and youth.
Some concerts are remembered for productions, others including this one are remembered more for the nostalgic memories, none more memorable than the rare Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler segue that longtime fans will recall from the earlier tours.
For the fans who braved the heat what they got in return was a trip down memory lane and a reminder that some things are just as impactful if not more when you experience them again.
